Watch this very short video to learn more about our Think Poetry program that is starting right now in January 2024 — then scroll down to the Think Poetry Q+A below!
A Skills-Based Program for Teachers and Librarians
We are offering the Think Poetry workshop to:
—current educators;
—retired teachers and librarians;
—teaching authors (poets who work with schools).
We hope to motivate poem writing PLUS provide guidance for full participants in how to incorporate various poetry writing skills, such as alliteration and metaphor, as well as poem elements such as rhyming and free verse poetry. We plan to publish a finished book in Summer 2024. All participants will be invited to write five poems that fit specific skills prompts and that also address specific language arts topics.
Two videos on humor in children's poetry will kick off the video series, followed by short videos on various techniques and forms, including:
— rhyme;
— repetition;
— rhythm;
— stanzas or specific structures (alignment, acrostic, etc.);
— metaphor or simile;
— alliteration;
— list poem
— mask poem or poem of address (using personification or dialogue)
— syllabic forms (haiku, tanka, cinquain, etc.)
— free verse (with and without punctuation and capitalization)
We hope that each full participant in Think Poetry will have one poem in the book, but inclusion is not guaranteed.
Registration opens on January 2nd and closes on January 9th, 2024.
Registered participants will be invited to join a Zoom introduction to the project on January 27th or 28th (choose one session).
Think Poetry will accommodate flexible at-your-own-pace writing schedules. If you want to watch all the videos and then write all of your poems in a week, you can do that. Or if you need to write poems at a more leisurely pace, you can do that instead. Please note, though: in order for us to produce a book that will be published in Summer 2024, we need to select poems for the book by mid-March.
There will be an option to participate in this project in a limited way ($99 fee which will be donated to charity along with profits from the book). Please send us an email if you would like to know details on limited participation.
We have gathered approximately 100 names of poets who would like to be invited as guest poets for our book. We have been honored to draw from this list for our past several books, including poets such as Naomi Shihab Nye, Jack Prelutsky, Margarita Engle, Nikki Grimes, Jacqueline Woodson, and Linda Sue Park. A handful of poets will be invited to be guest poets for our next Think Poetry project.
In the past we have invited alums of our Anthologies 101 course to submit poems —unfortunately, though, alumni invitations will likely not happen for this 2024 project.
Registration for Think Poetry will open on January 2nd and we will begin sending the program materials (videos with poem examples, etc.) to full participants immediately after registration closes. Full participants will engage in self-paced study in January and will receive feedback on their writing in February and March.
